Border Patrol agent injured in assault; suspect taken into custody

TUCSON, Arizona (13 News) – A Border Patrol agent was injured in an assault Saturday, March 4, while a suspect was in custody in Cochis County.

The incident occurred around 4 a.m. near Fordy Road and State Route 92, west of Palominas, according to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection statement.

Tucson Sector agents took Subject into custody after investigating his illegal entry into the United States. Subject attacked Agent while being placed in a vehicle, injuring Agent’s face and hands. Additional agents responded and took the suspect into custody.

The assaulted agent was transferred for treatment. Her condition has not been disclosed, but her chief Raul L. Ortiz said she is recovering.

The FBI is investigating an assault on a federal employee. The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office is also investigating.

Ortiz said the suspect has been charged with assaulting a federal employee and illegally entering the country.
