Border Patrol Agent Shot, Killed Near Canadian Border

Federal authorities announced Monday that a Border Patrol agent was shot and killed at a traffic stop in northern Vermont.

vermont state police first reported A Border Patrol agent was shot and killed in Coventry, a town in Vermont near the U.S.-Canada border. The incident occurred around 3:15 p.m. local time along Interstate 91, and traffic was closed in both directions. Hours later, federal immigration authorities announced that the officer had been killed by gunfire.

“On January 20, a Border Patrol agent assigned to the U.S. Border Patrol’s Swanton Sector was shot and killed in the line of duty,” Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said in a statement shared with the Daily Caller News Foundation. “This incident is currently under investigation and CBP will release additional information as it becomes available.”

The deadly shooting occurred on the day President Donald Trump was inaugurated, fulfilling a campaign promise to issue a number of border-related executive orders. Republicans have declared a national emergency at the southern border, designated cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, halted refugee resettlement for months, and banned births for people born to illegal immigrant parents on U.S. soil. He signed an order ordering the termination of his citizenship.

“Border Patrol agents put themselves at risk every day to keep Americans and our homeland safe,” said Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Benjamin Huffman. Monday’s statement. “We extend our prayers and deep condolences to our department, the agent’s family, loved ones, and colleagues.”

Neither CBP nor the Vermont State Police have released details about the identity of the investigators or the suspects involved.
