CLEVELAND (AP) — Browns wide receiver Marquis Goodwin will miss the start of his first training camp with Cleveland with a blood clot in his leg and lung.
Goodwin signed a free agency deal with the club in February, giving quarterback Deshawn Watson a long-awaited deep threat. Goodwin, 32, suffered from discomfort in his legs and shortness of breath during spring practice. An examination revealed a blood clot.
“I’ve had injuries throughout my career, so I was really nervous at first, but I’ve never been in a situation where it could have been detrimental if left untreated,” Goodwin said in a statement released by the team.
“It was scary at first, but now I’m at peace. I just prayed and left it to God. It’s out of my control and the only thing I can control is my effort and attitude and how I approach each day going forward.”
Goodwin was with Seattle last season. In 102 NFL games, he has 187 receptions for 3,023 yards and 18 touchdowns. The Browns hoped to strengthen their defense and hoped to enter the rotation alongside Amari Cooper, Elijah Moore and Donovan Peoples-Jones.
Goodwin was a third-round draft pick by Buffalo in 2013 and spent four seasons with the Bills, then three with San Francisco.
The team has yet to confirm when Goodwin will be able to return to football. He will attend training camp starting Saturday in West Virginia.
“This is a really disappointing deal that we have to deal with, but we need to deal with it the right way. The Browns are doing everything in their power to get through this deal by allowing me to be around the team, on the field and in meetings,” he said.
“I’m grateful for that and I hope that this situation is back under control so I can feel my body and what I need to feel and contribute to the success of this team.”
