BRYAN LEIB: The US Should Stop Funding The United Nations

Founded with a noble vision to promote peace, security and cooperation in the world, the United Nations has in recent decades become an organization far removed from its founding principles. Instead, it has transformed into a vast bureaucracy with rampant mismanagement, fiscal inefficiency, and a consistent track record of undermining America's core values and interests.

as largest funder At the United Nations, the United States continues to funnel billions of taxpayer dollars to an organization that has repeatedly shown hostility toward key allies, particularly Israel, and has often turned a blind eye to terrorism and human rights abuses. (Related: Sen. Tommy Tuberville: Biden-Harris VA created a crisis that can't be ignored)

It's time for the United States to stop this misinvestment and reallocate funds to domestic needs.

At the heart of the UN's failures is chronic misuse of funds. The United States provides nearly 22% of the UN's core budget and more than 25% of its peacekeeping budget, totaling billions of dollars annually. In 2022 America will donated more than $18 billion To the United Nations.

But reports of wasteful spending and bureaucratic inefficiency have plagued the organization for years. From excessive administrative costs to inflated staff salaries, much of the UN's funding is funneled into bloated systems that do little to advance its stated mission.

One of the clearest examples of the United Nations' dysfunction is the rampant fraud and corruption. corruption in of The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) is an organization specifically tasked with assisting Palestinian refugees.

Not only has UNRWA failed to achieve meaningful results, it has been mired in controversy for many years. The investigation uncovered widespread misconduct within the agency, including inflated salaries and increases for employees. linked attacks on terrorist organizations such as Hamas, UNRWA school and equipment store weapons.

Even more troubling is that, unlike any other refugee agency in the world, UNRWA's very mission perpetuates the Palestinian refugee problem by passing refugee status from generation to generation.

Rather than providing solutions, UNRWA becomes part of the problem, maintains the status quo, and promote extremist activity. Continuing to fund such institutions is a direct affront to both fiscal responsibility and U.S. national security.

So, in addition to funding organizations like UNRWA, the United Nations' disturbing track record of appeasing and even supporting rogue regimes and terrorist organizations is equally concerning. United Nations agencies have repeatedly failed to take meaningful action against countries and entities that directly threaten U.S. security interests or the safety of our allies.

Take Hezbollah, a designated terrorist organization by both the United States and the European Union. Instead of holding Hezbollah accountable for its acts of terrorism and destabilization in the Middle East, the United Nations has repeatedly turned a blind eye. UNIFIL, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, was established to guarantee Hezbollah's security. disarmed After the 2006 war with Israel. However, Hezbollah not only retains its weapons, but also expands its arsenal by using UNIFIL's presence as a shield for its operations. Why should America continue to fund organizations that fail to prevent terrorism and sometimes appear to enable it?

Are we noticing a trend here from the United Nations? They fund groups like UNWRA while turning a blind eye to the massive human rights violations by terrorist groups, but perhaps the UN's Israel Perhaps no issue reveals the UN's bias more clearly than its treatment of the United Nations.

Israel, the only true democracy in the Middle East, is under a constant barrage of unfair criticism and condemnation from various United Nations agencies. For example, the United Nations Human Rights Council announced: Further condemnation resolution More than any other country on earth, Israel often ignores flagrant human rights violations in countries such as Iran, China, and North Korea. The obsession with demonizing Israel is not only wrong, it is dangerous.

As Israel's most loyal ally, the United States cannot continue to fund organizations that actively undermine Israel's right to self-defense and sovereignty. The UN's consistent siding with anti-Israel forces has emboldened terrorist organizations like Hamas, which use the UN's political cover to launch attacks on innocent civilians. Why should American taxpayers fund an organization that consistently acts against our closest allies?

With all of this in mind, I believe that the United States is no longer fundamentally bankrupt when vast resources could be used to improve infrastructure and fund programs to eliminate veteran suicide in the United States. The decision was reached that the system should not be supported.

The United Nations' original promise was collective security and global cooperation. But in reality, it has transformed into an anti-Western, anti-Israel platform rife with corruption and inefficiency.

There are better ways to engage with the world and promote peace, security and human rights. Bilateral agreements, regional partnerships, and support for truly effective international organizations are all avenues the United States can pursue without the baggage of the United Nations.

It's time to stop sending billions of dollars to organizations that are not aligned with American values and interests. American taxpayers should no longer be asked to fund corrupt bureaucracies that support terrorist groups, weaken allies, and mismanage their resources. The United Nations had a chance and failed.

The United States should finally stop funding this failed organization and redirect resources to initiatives that truly serve American interests and values.
