Bryce Fire burns 850 acres in eastern Arizona, 25% controlled

Authorities report that the fire continues to exhibit extreme behavior.

Current Situation

PIMA, Ariz. – The Graham County fire has spread across approximately 3,137 acres, and is currently only 29% contained, as per the Arizona Department of Forestry Fire Control.

Former residents of the river corridor in the Fort Thomas area have been notified that the evacuation status has been downgraded to a “ready” state.

This “ready” status now applies to residents of the River Corridor at Fort Thomas, as well as those living between Eden Road and Fort Thomas.

Latest Fire Updates

Officials indicated that the Blythe Fire, which originated on May 7 and is believed to be human-caused, is located three miles west of Pima, near US 70.

Fire crews are actively working to protect Fort Thomas and maintain a secure area along 70.

The fire is significantly impacting the lower Gila River area near Eden, where dense Tamarisk vegetation is present, according to officials.

“Tamarisk, also known as salt cedar, is a highly flammable invasive species that complicates suppression efforts. When burned, it can generate extreme fire behavior and heavy black smoke,” an official explained.

About 287 personnel have been deployed to tackle the fire.

Authorities noted that extreme fire behavior persisted into Sunday, driven by winds.

US 70 remains open, although this could change as fire conditions evolve. Drivers traveling between Fort Thomas and Pima should be cautious of smoke in the area.

Pinal County Public Health and the Office of Emergency Management advised that smoke has reduced visibility and impacted air quality near Superior and Queen Valley. They recommend that individuals with respiratory sensitivities stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed.
