Fire Update: Blaine Fire Incident
Start date: Wednesday, May 7, 2025
Location: 3 miles west of Pima, along US 70
Personnel involved: 287
Cause: Human activity
Area affected: 2,896 acres
Containment status: 25%
The fire activity has led to enhanced control measures during Sunday night’s shift, with firefighters focusing on the north side and east of River Road. A containment line was established nearly a mile long by aerial operations the previous night. Emergency teams continue their efforts to prevent the fire from impacting local railways, utilities, homes, and agricultural lands. Today, a red flag warning has been issued, indicating conditions for heightened vigilance as they maintain containment lines over the next few days. Some interior smoke persists from smoldering salt cedars in the Gira riverbed. The looming weather conditions are expected to fuel further fire activity, so personnel will monitor the situation closely. Type 1 helicopters are prepared to assist ground resources if needed. A team of over 270 personnel, including hotshots, hand crews, engines, and medical teams, has been deployed to manage the incident, with heavy aircraft also on standby in case of worsening fire conditions.
The National Weather Service has issued red flag warnings for parts of the East and Southeast, which include Graham County and the Blythe Fire area. This warning will be active from 12 PM to 7 PM, indicating low humidity and wind gusts reaching up to 45 mph. Fires that ignite under these conditions can spread rapidly.
Additionally, Stage 2 fire restrictions are now in effect across southeastern Arizona on state, federal, and certain tribal lands, including Graham County. Under these restrictions, activities like campfires, target shooting, and fireworks are prohibited. Notably, fireworks and target shooting are never allowed on state trust lands.
Residents along the riverside corridors in the Fort Thomas area, especially between Eden Road and Fort Thomas, are advised to remain in a pre-evacuation status. US 70 is still open, but travelers should remain cautious of potential traffic delays or closures.
Evacuation and closure notes: The Graham County Emergency Management Office has prepped for 70 homes north of US 70, between Eden Road and Fort Thomas, as well as all residences along the river in Fort Thomas.
Weather advisory: Red flag warnings remain in effect Monday from 12 PM to 7 PM, covering Graham County and the Blythe Fire area.
Safety notice: Due to aircraft operations, temporary flight restrictions (TFR) are in place around the fire. The presence of drones in the area could hinder wildfire management efforts and pose serious risks. Maintaining clear airspace is crucial for safety.
