Burcar gaining national recognition as he leads Northern Arizona towards growth

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Shane Barker continues to take a steady approach, convinced that accountability and integrity are fundamental for success both on and off the court.

This conviction was validated not only by victories but also by the experiences he cultivated during his six seasons as head coach at Northern Arizona.

His standing was further affirmed when he was nominated as a finalist for the Skip Prosser Man of the Year Award. “I don’t want to get too emotional about it, especially thinking of all the great individuals in that category—it’s just very fulfilling,” Barker reflected. “It’s a team effort, and earning that respect is significant. While it’s an individual accolade, it’s also a recognition of the program.”

Barker joined the Flagstaff team as an assistant after coaching at the high school level for 12 years. He stepped up as interim coach in 2019 when Jack Murphy left for a position at his alma mater, Arizona.

Quickly, Barker infused his vision into the program, guiding not only the players’ skills but also their character, stressing the importance of accountability.

His strategies proved effective.

Under his leadership, NAU saw an increase in wins each season. When Barker was named a finalist for the Prosser Award, the outpouring of messages from newcomers, parents, and former players was heartening.

“Winning matters, let’s be real. But you can balance both; you can be a good person and still win,” Barker remarked. “You can have challenges with your team, but also build strong relationships while achieving on the court.”

The Lumberjacks witnessed this first-hand.

Since Barker took over, NAU’s win total rose from six in the 2020-21 season to 18. The team made its postseason debut last spring, earning a spot in the CBI tournament, where they faced Queen’s College and lost 85-78 in the first round.

As they look to build on their momentum in year seven, the roster has undergone changes, common in today’s transfer portal era.

Key players like rebound leader Carson Tow and high-scoring Trent McLaughlin have departed, leaving significant gaps in the team.

Returning to the roster is Ryan Abelman, who had a shooting percentage of 45% during conference play. Barker has worked to enhance the team through the transfer portal, bringing in taller, more athletic post players and former Buffalo point guard Cubbon Bradford.

Additionally, Barker recruited two high school athletes, who he believes will make an immediate impact in the current transfer-driven landscape.

“Our aim is to compete for a Big Sky Championship; we’re fully committed to that,” Barker stated. “Other coaches might have the same aspirations, but after winning 18 games, if we can find two more victories, we’ll be in the top four in the league.”

Barker is dedicated to establishing a solid foundation and ensuring everything is done the right way.
