Burcar gaining national recognition while advancing Northern Arizona’s progress

Shane Barker’s Commitment to Integrity in Coaching

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Shane Barker remains steadfast in his belief that accountability and integrity are crucial for success, both on and off the court.

His approach has been validated not only through victories but also in the positive environment he fostered during six seasons as the head coach at Northern Arizona University.

Barker experienced further validation when he was nominated as a finalist for the Skip Prosser Man of the Year Award. “I don’t want to get too emotional about the impressive people on that list—but it felt like an affirmation,” Barker remarked. “This recognition reflects the collective effort we put in; it’s not just about me, but about the entire program.”

He joined Flagstaff as an assistant after a 12-year tenure as a high school coach. When Jack Murphy moved on in 2019 to become Associate Head Coach at Arizona, Barker was elevated to interim coach.

Since then, he has left his mark, not just developing skilled players but also nurturing their character by holding them accountable.

His strategies have proven effective. Under Barker’s guidance, NAU saw its win total rise each season. Following his nomination for the Prosser Award, messages of congratulations flooded in from freshmen, parents, and former players.

“Let’s be real—winning matters. But you can achieve success while also becoming a better person,” Barker said. “You can build relationships while still racking up wins.”

And that’s exactly what he did. After Barker took the reins, NAU’s wins jumped from six the previous season to 18. The Lumberjacks made it to the postseason for the first time in years, earning an invite to the CBI tournament, where they faced Queen’s College but fell short, 85-78.

Reflecting on the season, Barker expressed pride in his team. “We went to the postseason on an invitation; we didn’t think we were overstating our case,” he noted.

Looking ahead to year seven offers new challenges, especially with roster changes driven by the transfer portal’s impact.

Last season, they lost key players like Carson Tow and Trent McLaughlin, which left notable gaps. However, NAU does return Ryan Abelman, who posted a 3-point shooting percentage of 45% during conference play. Barker also boosted the roster through the portal, bringing in taller and more athletic post players, along with former Buffalo point guard Cubbon Bradford.

Additionally, he secured two high school recruits, considering that transfers might have an immediate impact as they reshape the team’s dynamics.

“Our aim is to compete for a Big Sky Championship, and that’s our focus,” Barker affirmed. “While I know other coaches share that goal, after winning 18 games, just two more victories could put us in the top four.”

Barker is the one who built this foundation, ensuring everything is done the right way.
