Burglars who stole guns from L.A. Mayor Bass’ home sentenced to prison

Two men who broke into Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass’ Baldwin Vista home last year and stole two guns were sentenced to prison on Tuesday.

Patricio Muñoz and Juan Espinoza appeared in court Tuesday morning in downtown Los Angeles to challenge one count of burglary and grand theft of firearms, respectively, according to Los Angeles County District Attorney Public Affairs Director Tiffany Bracknell. did not file.

Muñoz was sentenced to two years in prison. Bracknell said Espinoza had a previous burglary conviction and was sentenced to 32 months in prison.

The robbery took two guns (later identified as 38-caliber revolvers) but left behind cash and electronics, Bass said at the time. Bass, who was a congressman at the time, carried the gun for his own protection and kept it in a locked box in his closet, he said.

The break-in quickly became an issue in the Los Angeles mayoral race, with candidate Rick Caruso blaming Bass for not properly storing guns.

Police said Muñoz and Espinosa each used pseudonyms at the time of their arrest last year. Police said Espinoza was out on parole for the robbery and had a parole violation warrant at the time of the crime.
