For almost five decades, the Westervelt Warner family has significantly influenced the Demopolis community.
Their history ranges from managing a state-of-the-art paper mill to overseeing extensive Alabama forest lands via the Wester Belt Company, establishing a strong tie to the black belt region.
This legacy continues with Kade Warner, who has recently joined the board of directors for the Alabama Healthcare Science Foundation (ASH).
As a representative of the family’s current generation, Warner is set to steer the development of groundbreaking healthcare-focused high schools in Demopolis.
Hailing from Tuscaloosa, he leads the Westerbelt Company, a family-owned business steeped in 141 years of history, formerly known as Gulf State Paper Corporation. The company focuses on sustainable forestry practices, timber products, and conservation efforts through its properties in Western Alabama.
Warner’s leadership experience is integral to the foundation of the Alabama School of Healthcare Science, which is recognized as the nation’s first public high school dedicated to preparing future healthcare professionals.
“Demopolis has a unique significance in the Westervelt history, and it’s a privilege to contribute to something crucial for Alabama’s future,” Warner remarked. “The Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences not only offers quality education to students statewide but also establishes a solid pathway to address the needs of essential healthcare workers in rural regions.”
Scott Huffman, the president and CEO of the Ashs Foundation, noted that Warner’s family background and professional connections were vital in his appointment to the board.
“Kade Warner’s expertise and leadership are poised to greatly benefit our foundation and schools,” Huffman pointed out. “If you’re aiming for the perfect executive profile, just look at Kade’s qualifications. His passion for Alabama, particularly the black belt region, and his commitment to enhancing education and healthcare will be invaluable for our school and foundation.”
Warner ascended to the CEO position at Westerbelt in 2024 after holding several leadership roles, including COO and Chief Sustainability Officer. His past experience also includes work with Conservation Forestry, Hancock Natural Resources Group, and even the US Senate Banking Committee.
He earned degrees from the University of Alabama and the University of Georgia and participated in professional training via Harvard Extension. He holds various professional certifications, like CFA, CAIA, and FMVA.
Apart from his corporate endeavors, Warner engages actively in civic and industry leadership roles. His contributions include service in the West Alabama Chamber of Commerce, United Way of West Alabama, Rotary International, and several associations focused on forestry and wood products.
He and his wife, April, have two children and love to travel while discovering natural wonders.
The Alabama Healthcare Science School plans to welcome its first freshman class in August 2026 at the West Alabama University mini-campus in Livingston. The permanent residential campus in Demopolis is set to begin construction on October 14th, with Phase One projected to open in the fall of 2027.
A comprehensive plan for healthcare career pathways and curriculum development is in progress, with recruitment for faculty and students slated to follow soon. More information can be found at AlhealthCarehs.org.
