New Theatre Program at Sedona Oak Creek School District
This school year, the Sedona Oak Creek School District will launch an enhanced theatre program, with CAE Collmar stepping in as director.
The Sedona Oak Creek USD Education Foundation has pledged support for Colmer’s base salary, which is set at $60,582.
“I really think this could be a cornerstone for our community,” Colmer shared, reflecting on the energy she hopes to inspire. “Imagine walking through Uptown and encountering people buzzing with excitement, asking, ‘What’s your next performance?’ That’s the kind of vibe we can create. It’s ambitious, but why not dream big?”
Colmer emphasized the importance of theatre for everyone: “There’s something in the theatre that can teach you so much, no matter your aspirations. The impact of the performing arts touches us all. Students participating in this program will experience a transformative journey that fosters commitment, creativity, and collaboration. It’s astonishing and can truly change lives.”
Raised in Arizona, Colmer recently completed her Master’s in Educational Management at Grand Canyon University in May 2023. Currently, she has no plans to shift into administrative roles since she enjoys teaching in the classroom.
She earned her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Arizona in 1996 and went on to obtain her Master’s from the University of California, Irvine in 1998.
“What impressed us about Collmar during recruitment was her genuine ability to connect with people,” noted Swaninger. “It’s about more than just her craft knowledge; she really connects with the community.”
The new program will feature two groups, dividing middle and high school students for performances. Students can choose an introductory performance class along with a stagecraft course that focuses on technical aspects of theatre, including lighting and design.
Swaninger mentioned that auditions were conducted this spring with promising participation, which is exciting. “We want to offer both entry-level opportunities and more advanced classes for those serious about pursuing the performing arts. Some of our initial productions will be smaller, just to get things rolling,” he explained.
This fall, the first show will be a rendition of “A Dickens Christmas Carol,” adapted by Gary Peterson.
“I’m not sure if I’d classify it strictly as a musical, but there is a song,” Colmer remarked. She wanted to introduce a classic holiday tale to the community and to help her students connect with her. While the goal is clear, she isn’t overly concerned about the number of big musical numbers.
For spring, Colmer confirmed the students will perform “Poe’s Midnight Dream,” a collection of vignettes based on the life of 19th-century writer Edgar Allan Poe.
Colmer describes it as her favorite work, calling it “Peter Pan,” noting the beauty in its exploration of imagination. “There’s something lovely about Poe’s writing—even in its darkness,” she said, referencing the idea that one must see the darker aspects of life to appreciate beauty.
Although not yet finalized, SOCSD aims to expand theatre programming at West Sedona School. Colmer plans to offer semester-long after-school workshops for fourth and fifth graders, culminating in short performances to introduce them to the theatre program.
“I truly believe in our community’s talent,” Swaninger said. “We have many local experts in theatre, and we hope to collaborate closely to enhance the experience for our students, leading to stronger performances.”
Colmer stressed that community support is vital for the program, particularly in areas such as stage costume or set rentals. “Even small contributions will help us significantly. We want everyone to feel involved,” she explained, expressing that they will seek volunteers for production needs.
Collmar can be reached via email for those interested in getting involved.
Additionally, Swaninger highlighted the willingness of the Sedona-Oak Creek USD Educational Foundation to fund Dr. Chelle Kemper’s recruitment. “With my retirement as Director of Teaching and Learning at Goldsmith, we felt budget constraints would limit us in hiring next year. The foundation’s support is essential,” he said, expressing excitement about the future.
