The Calera Police Department has expressed concerns over a recent TikTok challenge. Authorities are asking for help on social media to identify two individuals who are suspected of participating in what’s been dubbed the Virus Door Knocking Challenge.
This challenge involves people knocking, kicking, or slapping random doors, often late at night, in an attempt to capture the reactions of surprised residents. Initially, police thought the suspects linked to an incident in Camden Cove were trying to commit robbery, but it seems they may have just been engaging in a prank.
The police have cautioned that such pranks can have serious repercussions if residents feel threatened. In Alabama, laws allow homeowners to use deadly force if they perceive an immediate risk to themselves or their families.
Calera Police also warn that participants in this challenge might face legal repercussions, including charges related to trespassing and damage to property. The department has indicated that it will pursue prosecution against anyone involved in similar acts.
Residents who encounter such incidents are advised to keep a record of what transpired. This includes saving any video footage from security systems and noting details like time and descriptions of the suspects. Reporting these incidents to local law enforcement is crucial, especially if there’s any property damage or safety concerns.
Homeowners should also review their insurance policies to understand what damages might be covered.
To avoid future occurrences, considering extra safety measures can be beneficial. Installing upgraded smart doorbell cameras, adding motion-sensor lighting, and enhancing door security can help deter such activities.
The Calera Police Department is still investigating the Camden Cove incident and is encouraging anyone with information about the suspects to come forward.
