California man arrested for alleged threats to Arizona official

Federal prosecutors said William Hyde, 52, left threatening voicemails on the personal cell phones of election workers at the Maricopa County Recorder's Office.

PHOENIX — A day after Maricopa County officials certified the 2022 election results, employees at the Maricopa County Recorder's Office received a concerning voicemail on their personal cell phones. federal prosecutor said.

A San Diego man was arrested Thursday on interstate threatening charges related to a voicemail. William Hyde, 52, is scheduled to make his first court appearance Friday in San Diego.

“Election integrity begins with protecting the people entrusted with administering elections,” said U.S. Attorney Gary M. Restaino for the District of Arizona. “We appreciate the outstanding efforts of the Maricopa County Recorder’s Office and the Department of Elections to efficiently register Arizonans to vote and ensure their votes are counted accurately and transparently.”

If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison.

“Threats against election officials undermine the very foundations of our democracy,” said Tara McGrath, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of California. “Even just one incident has a ripple effect. This office will vigorously prosecute any attempt to intimidate, intimidate, or intimidate election officials engaged in these critical duties.”
