‘California Soul’ Jazz Icon Dead At 81

Iconic jazz singer Malena Shaw died Friday at the age of 81.

Shaw's daughter Marla Bradshaw said: “It is with a very heavy heart that we and our family announce the passing of our beloved mother, your beloved icon and artist Marlena Shaw. I will,” he said. “She went to listen to some of her favorite songs.''

According to the newspaper, Bradshaw said his mother's death was “peaceful” and that the famous singer's relatives were also “resting in peace.”

“Rest in heaven,” Bradshaw wrote, adding a heart emoji.

The show was known for songs such as “California Soul” and “Ghetto Women,” the paper said. She worked for the Chess record label until she moved to another label that focused on the jazz genre. (Related: Legendary jazz artist Les McCann dies at age 88)

According to the paper, Verve Records released a statement regarding Shaw's death.

“We are sad to announce the passing of Marlena Shaw, a wonderful singer whose 'California Soul' is as popular as ever today and who released the album 'It is Love: Record Live at Vine Street.' “He was instrumental in relaunching the Verve label in 1987,” Verve Records said.

The show's songs tackle themes such as racism, with an emphasis on the empowerment of black women, the paper said. This jazz singer's music has been sampled in popular media, television commercials, and other songs for generations. According to the paper, she has released 17 albums on eight different record labels throughout her highly influential career.

“Mr. Shaw is in heaven,” Bradshaw said of his mother.
