Camilla Luddington from ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ shares her diagnosis of Hashimoto’s disease.

Camila Luddington Opens Up About Hashimoto’s Disease Diagnosis

Camila Luddington has shared her journey with Hashimoto’s disease after a prolonged period of feeling unwell. The actress, known for her role as Dr. Joe Wilson on “Grey’s Anatomy,” spoke candidly about her health issues during a recent podcast episode.

While co-hosting with Jennifer Capshaw, Luddington described her initial reaction to the diagnosis as a mix of surprise followed by relief. She felt grateful to finally have answers about the symptoms troubling her. It was a significant moment for her, as she had been dealing with these issues without understanding their cause.

Doctors diagnosed her following a blood test several months earlier. Reflecting on the moment she heard the term “autoimmune disease,” she admitted to feeling confused, saying, “What is that?” Initially, she thought her difficulties stemmed from menopause but later learned she was dealing with something different.

“I mean, when they told me it was an autoimmune disease, I was caught off guard. But when they said it was common, my response was somewhat resigned, like, ‘Okay, it’s unfortunate, but I guess that’s life,’” Luddington explained. Ultimately, though, the diagnosis provided her with a sense of relief, as she finally had an explanation for her health concerns.

During the podcast, she elaborated on what Hashimoto’s entails, describing it as a condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland, which plays a crucial role in regulating energy levels. She humorously added, “Basically, you’re still fabulous with Hashimoto’s.” This light-heartedness contrasted with the reality of her situation, where she noted feeling depleted and cold as her thyroid function declined.

Luddington is now on medication to manage her condition, which she hopes will help her regain some energy. It’s a process, and while she’s navigating this new reality, she seems determined to share her experience with others, perhaps to help those who might be facing similar struggles.
