Campaign Aide for Eric Adams Says Cash Given to Journalist Was a ‘Birthday Gift’

Strange Explanation from Former Aide to NYC Mayor

A former aide to New York City Mayor Eric Adams has provided an unusual rationale for giving reporters cash hidden in a potato chip bag, according to the New York Post.

Adams is pursuing a second term as mayor after Democrat Congressman Zoran Mamdani secured the Democratic nomination on June 24, besting Andrew Cuomo and others. Winnie Greco, the aide in question, filed a complaint regarding this incident. Reporter Katie Hollan stated that the cash was meant as a “birthday present,” tucked away in an empty chip bag, which also contained a $100 invoice along with several $20 ones.

In her defense, Greco remarked, “I didn’t know how much was in my envelope because it’s a birthday gift, and because it’s Chinese culture. Someone please give me a birthday gift; I made a big mistake. I’m really sorry. Please reach out to my lawyer.” She later apologized, referring to the incident as “culture.”

The FBI had raided Greco’s home in February 2024 during an investigation into Adams’ connections with the Turkish government. Adams faced charges in September 2024 for illegal campaign contributions, bribery, and wire fraud. Interestingly, the Trump administration attempted to dismiss these charges, which led to several resignations from the U.S. Attorney’s office in the Southern District of New York. Ultimately, the charges were dropped in April.

Greco also accused Hollan of attempting to “hurt” her during the Post interview, stating, “If someone wants to hurt me because I love my community and the world, I can’t really say much.” This response highlights a rather emotional and somewhat tangential thought process.
