Winter Blast returns to SARA Park for the first time in 34 years this week, with dozens of campers preparing for the event in the sand dunes south of Lake Havasu City.
By Monday, dozens of recreational vehicles had already found a spot in the rocky desert landscape off Highway 95. For some, the event was a “must see” attraction for visitors to the Havasu area. For others, Winter Blast was the spectacle that accompanied a desert vacation.
“I’ve been here four times in the past to see the fireworks, and I’ve seen them twice from (the dunes south of Havasu),” says Bruce Letcliffe, former full-time Michigan traveler. said. “I’m camping here close to the rodeo grounds. This event has some really nice fireworks. I tell people to multiply the best fireworks show they’ve ever seen by 10.” I’m here.
The annual February fireworks display is organized by the Western Fireworks Association and is Lake Havasu City’s only fireworks display featuring legally permitted explosive fireworks. The event will see more than 700 of his members of the Fireworks Association attend, starting Wednesday, testing and filming fireworks, and the spectacle to be seen across the city.
Mesa’s BJ Spohn has been attending the event with her husband for nearly 25 years. They stayed with friends this week in a recreational vehicle in the sand dunes south of Havasu.
“We like being away from the busy streets and crowds of Mesa at this time of year,” says Spohn. “We’ve been traveling since our kids were little, and now that we’re retired, we just want to take off. We love fireworks and meet all kinds of new people every year.”
Long held at the SARA Park rodeo grounds, the five-day event often draws thousands of visitors and Havasu residents. But for some campers outside Havasu, the event wasn’t the only reason to attend.
For 85-year-old Bobby Fuller of Alabama, this week’s fireworks display is something different. And that’s enough.
“I’m a long way from home,” Fuller said. “Everyone here is from a different place. What brought you here? Because it wasn’t what you had. It’s a change: I needed a change. This place is better than many places.I will probably stay for the fireworks.”
