MARICOPA, Arizona — A police officer and a suspect were shot dead early Wednesday morning during a police investigation in Maricopa. The suspect later died from his injuries.
Maricopa city officials said the incident began around 1:30 a.m. when police responded to a call that three people had broken into a vehicle near Honeycut Road and Hartman Road. The person who called the break-in told police that he was chasing the suspects until one of them threatened him with a gun.
When officers arrived on the scene, the three suspects fled in different directions, two of them jumping over a fence to the Gila River Reservation.
Authorities said one of the suspects was in stable condition after firing a gun at the officers, hitting a police officer.
A second officer counterattacked and shot one of the suspects dead. The suspect has since died.
Two other suspects were detained, including one who was allegedly a minor.
Officials said the shooting on the reservation will be investigated by the FBI.
Maricopa authorities said they were investigating recent car thefts in the city. It is unknown if these break-ins are related to their theft.
