A Republican candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in Alabama's 2nd Congressional District believes his party can win the support of many former Democrats in a hotly contested race.
First-time political candidate Carolyn Dobson defeated former state Sen. Dick Brewbaker in a primary runoff election earlier this year to become the Republican candidate in the newly redistricted district.
She will now face off against Democratic candidate Shomali Figures in the November general election, which has attracted national attention and was recently named by Reuters as one of 11 House races to watch.
Dobson recently appeared on WVNN's “The Yaffe Program” to talk about his campaign.
“[F]”You know, people are tired of the same old thing all the time,” Dobson said. “They want action, and they want someone to represent them who is just like them – a working parent, someone who will fight for Alabama families. And I'm going to fight for Alabama families in the small towns across my district, in Mobile, in Montgomery and everywhere in between.”
The Congressional candidate said her message should resonate with voters of all parties in the district.

“We're suffering right now under the Biden economy, the open borders policies. Again, I think that's a really compelling motivator,” she argued. “And when I go out into the communities and talk to people, even people who I previously thought were Democrats, I hear stories of them being very concerned about the safety of their families. They're concerned about how much gas will cost, how much groceries will cost, and also about the woke indoctrination that the left is pushing. Whether we're seeing it with the change of scouting from the Boy Scouts to the Scouts, or boys and girls sports, there's no question that the left is trying to undermine some of the values that this country is founded on. And that's making people anxious across political lines.”
A poll conducted earlier this year showed Figures receiving 45% of the vote, Dobson slightly ahead with 44%, and 10% undecided.
She also thinks Democrats would appreciate her promotion of family values in the Yellow Hammer State.
“[A] “A lot of Democrats here in the 2nd District still go to church, they still fear God, they're concerned about what's going on on college campuses across the country,” she said, “and we really see students and young people of Jewish faith being persecuted. So, again, if Republicans are willing to work, get out in the community and offer even former Democrats an alternative, I think they have a great chance of winning this district.”
Dobson currently practices real estate law in Montgomery, representing home builders, retailers, small business owners and family farmers.
