Catalina Highway outside Tucson closed

Sunday’s fires at Mount Lemmon, near Tucson, were about 70 percent contained as of Monday morning, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

On Sunday, evacuations were ordered at Molino Basin Campground, Gordon Hirabayashi Campground, and General Hitchcock Campground. The Catalina Highway, also known as the Mount Lemon Highway, is closed to all non-residents.

Wildfires have started in the bowl of the Molino Basin near a popular shooting range and are moving on both sides of the north and south ridge lines. Therefore, shooters should avoid shooting in areas with flammable materials such as dry grass.

Coronado National Forest said it was too early to name the suspects, confirm whether charges would be filed, or provide details about the cause.

In all, the fires cover about 150 to 200 acres, and as of Monday morning, about 80 acres. According to the Pima County Sheriff’s Office, no structures, homes or objects are in danger.
