Byers said CBS has brought him in to mediate an internal turmoil over accusations by the network that its own reporters failed to be impartial.
CBS executives Wendy McMahon and Adrian Rourke filed a decree condemning the Sept. 30 interview with Coates that Dokoupil co-chaired with CBS colleagues Nate Burleson and Gayle King. the same journalist reported, although he declined to provide details on how or why this happened.

Byers said Crawford told him, “I don’t even understand why Tony’s interview doesn’t meet our editorial standards.”
“We thought our commitment was to the truth. When someone comes on the show with a one-sided explanation of a very complex situation (as Coates himself admits), it’s important to us that the audience knows the truth. “I understand that as journalists we have an obligation to challenge that worldview so that we can have access and have a more balanced account,” Crawford said. “And that’s what Tony did,” she continued.
“He challenged Coates’ one-sided worldview, and Coates had to respond. It was a civil matter…I don’t see how you could say it didn’t meet our editorial standards…Tony… “We stopped a one-sided account of a very complex situation completely devoid of history and facts from being aired on our network. As journalists, that’s our duty.” he added, Byers posted.

During the interview, Dokoupil pushed back against Coates’ book, calling it Israel’s “effort to turn the whole edifice upside down.”
“When I read this book, I realized that if I took your name off this book, took away your awards and accolades, and took the cover off of your book, the publisher would disappear and that section would disappear. When I imagine it, I have to say, “It wouldn’t be out of place in a militant’s backpack,” Dokoupil said.
“I wondered why Ta-Nehisi Coates, a very talented and smart man who I have known for many years, was leaving out so much.” Why do we ignore that Israel is dealing with terrorist groups that are trying to eliminate Israel? The first intifada and the second intifada, the cafe bombing. Why don’t you write in detail about the bus bombing and the young children who were blown away?” Dokoupil asked.
“Is it because you don’t believe that Israel has a right to exist under any circumstances?” he asked.
Mr. Coates disputed Mr. Dokoupil, saying that the viewpoints presented by Mr. Dokoupil were overvalued and that Mr. Coates’ intention was to express views that were not based on the platform, and that Mr. Dokoupil’s book was “Palestinian and It is not a treatise on the entire conflict between Israelis.”
Dokoupil pushed back.
“But if you read this book, you’re going to ask yourself, ‘Why does Israel exist?'” What a terrifying place, where horrible acts are commonplace. ”Therefore, I think the question of whether Israel has a right to exist is central and important. ”
Dokoupil’s ex-wife and two children live in Israel. revealed In 2023.
The Daily Caller reached out to Dokoupil, Crawford, McMahon, Rourke and CBS News for clarification, but did not receive a response in time for publication.
