Potential Move for Connecticut Sun:
Steve Pagliuca is on the verge of becoming a big player in the WNBA world. He’s part of a group that recently acquired the Connecticut Sun for a staggering $325 million, aiming to shift the team to Boston. But, the league isn’t exactly on board with that plan.
Before anything can happen, the sale needs the green light from the WNBA and its board, and there seems to be some reluctance regarding the Sun’s relocation.
“The decision about moving will rest with the WNBA Board of Directors, not individual teams,” according to an official statement from the WNBA. As part of a recent expansion effort, three new franchises were granted to Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia in June 2025, while several other cities were also being evaluated. Interestingly, Boston wasn’t among those cities at the time, as some places had already established a solid case during the expansion discussions.
Nonetheless, Pagliuca and his business partner, Bill Chisholm, are still optimistic about bringing the Sun to Boston. They’ve already committed $100 million for a new “world-class” practice facility, realizing that the current training conditions need serious upgrades.
According to Trenni Casey from NBC Sports Boston, “The Sun believes that a move to Boston would greatly benefit the players. They would get to play at TD Garden, step into a larger market, and experience top-notch facilities—something WNBA players have long sought.”
All in all, it’s shaping up to be a fascinating situation to monitor.
