Central Arizona College launches ‘Women in Engineering Scholarship’

Central Arizona University has created a new scholarship to provide financial support to female students interested in engineering.

The Women’s Engineering Scholarship was founded by CAC Professor of Engineering, Adjunct Professor of Anthropology, and Applied Researcher Almine Norabian and her husband, John Carnes, as part of an effort to make engineering more equitable. One agency reported that it was. press release.

Norabian has been working at CAC as a full-time engineering faculty member since 2019.

“I believe a rural community college like CAC is a metaphor for equity and access,” Noravian said in a release. “But engineering isn’t all that fair. While women make up just over 50% of the U.S. population, fewer than 30% of engineering degree holders are women. This is our world.” It means that their voices are not heard in identifying the problems that plague them and in developing solutions to them.”

The Women in Engineering Scholarship aims to encourage female students to complete major engineering courses at CAC. Scholarships of up to $1,500 are awarded each academic year. Funding is applied after all other scholarships and is disbursed only after the student successfully completes an engineering course.

Students interested in applying for scholarships must complete the Federal Student Aid Free Application and the online CAC Scholarship Application. Centralaz.edu/scholarships. In addition, applicants must have completed “Introduction to Engineering” with her B or better to demonstrate commitment to this pathway, and she must have a 3.0 GPA to be eligible.

Noravian and Kearns want to increase the scholarship fund. This is made possible by a donation to the CAC Foundation for the Women in Engineering Scholarship. Tax-deductible donations can be made online. Centrals.edu/give. Donors can select a donation amount and choose a female engineering scholarship from a drop-down menu, the release states.
