sedona news – On Sunday, March 24, 2024 at 3 p.m., Chamber Music Sedona will proudly present the legendary Orion String Quartet as part of the group’s farewell tour. The Orion String Quartet, considered one of today's greatest quartets, currently consists of brothers violinists Daniel and Todd Phillips, violinist Steven Tenenbom, and cellist Timothy Eddy. I am. Formed in 1987, the Orion String Quartet takes its name from a celestial constellation symbolizing the unique individuality of each musician who contributes to the collective pursuit of musical excellence. Over the past 36 years, the group has built a reputation as one of the finest chamber music ensembles on the classical music scene. Since 1997, Orion has been a seasonal artist for the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center (CMS), a distinguished career that will culminate in his April 2024 farewell performance at Alice Tully Hall.
Orion's performances have been praised for their “confidence, precision, fluidity, nuance, and crisp ornamentation” (Los Angeles Times) in both classical masterpieces and contemporary works. The quartet has premiered works by such notable composers as Chick Corea, David Del Tredici, Brett Dean, and Thierry Lanzino, and has significantly expanded its repertoire with over 20 commissioned works.
Throughout its remarkable journey, Orion has collaborated with esteemed musicians such as Pablo Casals, Sir András Schiff, Isaac Stern, and the Beaux-Arts Trio. The group also works on innovative projects that bring chamber music to diverse audiences, including collaborations with choreographer Bill T. Jones and the Ernie Zane Dance Company.
Orion's commitment to music education is evident through efforts such as CMS's “Beethoven 2000” at Lincoln Center, which showcases Beethoven's 16 string quartets to benefit nonprofit educational organizations. The New York Times praised the event, saying, “The players were of all ages, races, and dress codes…and when the final quartet finished, the players were greeted with a standing ovation.” Stated.
To commemorate its 30th anniversary, the Orion String Quartet performed Beethoven's complete works at the Mannes School of Music, where it held the status of Quartet in Residence for 27 years. The group's recordings of Beethoven's string quartets for Koch International Classics have garnered critical acclaim, with Gramophone stating that “listening to these recordings… you will be completely absorbed in the music.”
Additional albums include works by composers such as Peter Lieberson, Leon Kirchner, Dvorak, Mendelssohn, and Wynton Marsalis. The quartet's performances have been featured on NPR's Performance Today, PBS's Live from Lincoln Center, A&E's Breakfast with the Arts, and ABC Television's Good Morning America.
