Chandler resident James Taylor was arrested late Friday night and charged with first-degree murder after he admitted to shooting a 30-year-old woman in the alleyway behind his home, police said.

Chandler police responded to reports of shootings on Arizona Avenue and Fairview Street around 9:30 a.m., according to Chandler Police spokesperson Eva Zermeno.

Authorities found 30-year-old Jessica Russ in an alley upon arrival with multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and one to the head. She received emergency treatment and she was immediately taken to hospital, but she died from her injuries.

Investigation revealed that Luz was a homeless woman who was known to frequent the area. Police said Luz was standing in the alley behind Taylor’s house and her dog barked at Luz, which upset Taylor.

Police said Taylor repeatedly yelled at Luz to get out of the alley, but Luz would not leave.

Police said Taylor then entered the home, pulled out a 9 mm handgun, and then told Ruth to leave again, threatening to shoot him if he refused. Her Luz refused again and Taylor started shooting her over and over again.

Witnesses reported seeing a man police later identified as Taylor at the scene after the shooting. I watched you step in.

Authorities then sent a SWAT team to surround the residence. I was able to get in touch with Taylor, who is still in the residence, by phone. According to police reports, Taylor immediately asked negotiators if the woman he had shot had died.

According to police, Taylor agreed to leave the house after speaking with a negotiator and was reportedly angry about his suicide attempt the night before, and the suspect later called Luz in a post-arrest interview. He admitted to shooting.

In addition to first-degree murder, Taylor was also charged with possession of a weapon by a prohibited owner. Further investigation revealed that Taylor was based on a previous felony conviction of forfeiting the right to own a gun.
