Chip Roy Says Mike Johnson Does Not Have Votes For Speaker Despite Trump’s Endorsement

Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, said Tuesday that House Speaker Mike Johnson does not have the votes within the House Republican conference to remain speaker, despite President-elect Donald Trump’s endorsement of Johnson on Monday. He said no.

Roy’s comments that Johnson doesn’t have enough support in the House Republican conference to keep the speaker’s gavel after President Trump endorsed him in Truth Social magazine post on monday.

Rep. Thomas Massie, Republican of Kentucky, vowed on Dec. 18 to vote against Mr. Johnson as speaker, the only House Republican to publicly oppose Mr. Johnson.

Mr. Roy said the candidates he would like to see run for speaker if Mr. Johnson withdraws his name from consideration are Republican Rep. Byron Donald of Florida and influential House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan ( Ohio State) as a candidate.
