“Choices ahead”: Is Steve Marshall planning to run for U.S. Senate when Tuberville declares for Governor?

Sen. Tommy Tuberville Announces Run for Alabama Governor

In an official announcement, U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) declared his candidacy for the Governor of Alabama, which could lead to an open Senate seat in 2026.

There had been some anticipation that Lt. Colonel Ainsworth might pursue either the governor’s office or the Senate seat, but he recently clarified that he isn’t interested in the Senate, leaving the door open for a governor run.

Another potential candidate is Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall. When asked about his political aspirations during a recent interview on Capitol Journal of Alabama’s public television, he responded, “I think it’s number one. There’s no opening. I’m not going to play against Coach Tuberville for the Senate. If he decides to run for governor, then we’ll be looking at a different situation.”

Marshall added that during their previous conversation, he indicated he wasn’t keen on pursuing the governor’s position or any other state role. His background as Attorney General, he noted, has equipped him to represent Alabamians in Washington, D.C.

He mentioned, “As AG, we’ve dealt with several cases that intersect with what’s happening in Washington.” Marshall intends to assess his options after Tuberville makes his official announcement.

“I’m definitely interested in that,” he stated, “but I’m prepared to wait for what Coach Tuberville decides before fully addressing that question as events unfold.”
