Montgomery City Council Approves Curfew Ordinance
In a recent meeting, the Montgomery City Council voted on an ordinance that imposes a curfew on minors within the Downtown Entertainment District. While the decision was not unanimous, it has been approved.
The new curfew targets individuals under 17 years old, restricting their presence from 9 PM to 6 AM on weekdays and from 11 PM to 6 AM on Fridays and Saturdays. Additionally, the ordinance will also be applicable during school hours.
Councilman Mart Johnson, who has been advocating for a curfew for several years, shared his thoughts on the situation. “Honestly, nothing seems to happen with those under 17 after 9 AM,” Johnson remarked. “And considering we allow open carry of alcoholic beverages, it’s concerning if alcohol is being passed to kids during these hours.”
Those who violate the ordinance will face significant penalties. The first two offenses could result in a $500 fine, and further violations might lead to up to six months in jail.
However, not everyone on the council is in favor of this measure. Councillors Andrew Symansky and Olonde Mitchell opposed the ordinance, expressing worries about how it might impact the city’s image and concerns regarding its enforceability.
“They can’t just walk up to people and demand their identities,” Symansky stated. “I’m concerned about how this affects the overall perception of downtown. It’s crucial to focus on growth and positivity to support initiatives like Main Street and others that benefit the area.”
Earlier in the week, Montgomery Police Chief Jim Gravoys addressed recent violence in the city during a press conference. When questioned about the curfew’s effectiveness, he noted that such measures could be useful but also mentioned possible constitutional issues. He indicated that, if the curfew is put in place, his department would strive to enforce it, although he didn’t confirm outright support or opposition to the ordinance.
The ordinance will only take effect after the mayor’s signature.
