City of Yuma joins lawsuit over Colorado River transfer

Yuma, La Paz and Mojave counties have also filed lawsuits over the transfer of water to Queen Creek.

Yuma, Arizona (KECY, KYMA) – The City of Yuma is the latest municipality to join a lawsuit against the diversion of water from the Colorado River to Queen Creek, Arizona.

Yuma Mayor Doug Nicholls said the move would create a united front.

“The Colorado River community makes sure we have a future, and it won’t sell out from under us,” Nichols said.

The problem is moving 2,000 acre feet of water from La Paz County to Queen Creek in central Arizona.

Their town council unanimously approved the $27 million purchase earlier this month.

Deputy Mayor Jeff Brown said, “I’m going to vote YES because interest rates won’t go down and water bills won’t go down.

The transfer is likely to take place, but the governments involved in the lawsuit hope to prevent similar moves in the future.

By joining forces with La Paz, Mojave and Yuma counties in litigation, we are able to split the costs of their legal representation.

“We want the Yuma community to know that we are actively protecting our water and safeguarding our future,” Nichols said.

Mayor Nichols said he is considering adding other communities to the lawsuit.
