City of Yuma selects new Chief of Police

YUMA, Arizona (KYMA, KECY) – The city of Yuma elected Thomas Garrity as its new police chief.

According to the press release, Garrity has worked in law enforcement for 32 years.

Not only that, but he also served as commander of the Prince William County Police Department in Virginia.

Garrity will succeed Chief of Staff Susan Smith, who has announced plans to retire in late January 2023.

Since being appointed YPD Chief in 2019, Smith has been with YPD for 30 years.

“It is an honor and a shame to be chosen as the next Chief of Police in Yuma.

“The women and men in this department are dedicated to working with our communities to make Yuma the best place to work, live and play. Together we will continue this important work. I am thrilled to be a part of Yuma’s future…”

All in all, Garrity’s opening date will be January 9, 2023.
