“The main entrance area was completely engulfed in flames and there was no way to escape from there,” OFCA Captain Thanh Nguyen said.
Good Samaritans, including neighbors, risked their lives to rescue a trapped woman who was screaming for help, ABC7 reported.
One neighbor, Phil Johnson, described how he rushed downstairs to his neighbor's house, which was engulfed in flames, ABC7 reported. The paper said an elderly man named Jerry and his stepdaughter Lori were trapped.
“I opened the door to see if I could get him out of there, and a big column of black smoke came out,” Johnson said. “I remembered that there was a fire extinguisher right below, so I went downstairs to get it, broke the glass, cut my finger, and deployed the fire extinguisher, but it didn't touch the fire.”
Johnson said it was impossible to save Jerry, but he heard cries for help coming from Lori's bedroom, ABC7 reported.
“There's like four cleaning ladies coming over here and I'm like, 'Oh my God.' We have to do something.' So I was still trying to figure out how to help Jerry, and they… came here with a broom and broke the window and took Jerry out,” Johnson said. “In my opinion, it was the cleaning women who saved her life.”
According to ABC7, Lori was taken to the hospital, but the extent of her injuries is unknown. However, the fire claimed Jerry's life, the newspaper reported.
Another neighbor, Veronica Traurig, said, “I'm very grateful that my neighbors are paying attention. Especially if there are elderly people living around here, I would like to be more careful.” I think so,” he said.
Witnesses said good Samaritan cleaning women left the scene after rescuing the woman, ABC7 reported.
