CNN Guest Says Harris Skipping Economic ‘Specifics’ Could Pay Off

Shira Stein, Washington correspondent for the San Francisco Chronicle, told CNN on Wednesday that Vice President Kamala Harris's avoidance of economic “details” may pay off, arguing that swing voters don't want to hear about it.

Harris began announcing her economic policy in mid-August, but received strong backlash for her proposal to ban “corporate price gouging” by the federal government and to promote a housing plan that would provide $25,000 to first-time homebuyers. CNN host Jake Tapper questioned the correspondent on whether Harris “hasn't focused on the economy” throughout her career, to which Stein agreed, adding that swing voters may just want her “vision” for economic policy. “Jake, that’s true, but I think what I would say, and what she would probably say, is that in her role as attorney general, she has addressed some economic issues. [I] “I think the price gouging speaks to a certain extent to that,” Stein said. “The problem we have in all of this is we get the vision of her economic plan, her policy plan, but we don't get the specifics. This could be a bet that works.”

“Right now I'm writing a piece for the Chronicle about specifics, not specifics that are what voters want to hear,” Stein continued. “They just want to hear a vision. They want to understand that the person running for office wants to understand what I'm trying to do.” [be] “You talk about these issues. So, while it may piss people off in Washington, it may actually have an effect on swing voters.”

Rafael Arroyo, a Hispanic business owner, said in a recent Fox News interview that inflation has “stifled” his business in Nevada and questioned why Harris and the Biden-Harris administration aren't addressing the issue.

“So some of them are doubled, tripled in price. And, you know, it's really hard to make money that way. My point to Ms. Harris and the Biden-Harris administration is, if you have such a great idea, why not do it?” Arroyo said.

Voters said the economy, inflation and immigration were their top concerns when it came to voting in November, trailing former President Donald Trump among voters who think Harris can address those issues. An ABC News/Ipsos poll released on Sept. 15 gave Trump a 7-point lead on the economy and a 10-point lead on immigration.
