CNN Host Confronts Gov. Whitmer On Harris’ Inability To Fulfill Her Campaign Promises Throughout Her Vice Presidency

CNN anchor Kate Bolduan on Tuesday grilled Michigan Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer about Vice President Kamala Harris' failure to deliver on campaign promises throughout her three and a half years in office.

Bolduan cited Republican vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance, who told CNN on Friday that Harris is falsely promising to solve the problems facing the American people when she has three and a half years to fulfill her current campaign promises. Governor Whitmer defended Harris against Vance's criticism, claiming she lacks basic knowledge of the vice presidency.

“How can you claim to accomplish something when you've done nothing in three and a half years? [Vance] “Does it mean anything?” Bolduin asked.

“Hell, even in J.D. Vance's home state, they had a steel mill that was on the verge of closing under Trump and now it's thriving because of the work Harris and Biden have done to strengthen the supply chain,” Whitmer said. “This is about American manufacturing and you just have to look at J.D. Vance's home state to see how people are benefiting.” [from] It's a good paying job… but I think it's very telling how ignorant J.D. Vance is about the vice presidency, and that's exactly why we need a leader who knows the job, who can get things done, who can make our lives better.”

Harris has shifted her views on several policy issues since her time as a U.S. senator and her ill-fated 2020 presidential campaign. (Related: 'I felt a little sorry for her': JD Vance says Kamala Harris seems unsure about her policies)

As a senator, Harris co-sponsored the Green New Deal in 2019 and supported eliminating the filibuster to pass legislation, and as a presidential candidate she supported a ban on fracking, which she has since backed down during her current campaign.

The Vice President supported Grant During the 2020 campaign, she advocated for health care coverage for illegal immigrants, likened Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to the Ku Klux Klan and called for abolishing the agency in 2018. Throughout her current presidential campaign, Harris has attempted to recast herself as a tough-on-border candidate. Promising Thousands of additional Border Patrol agents will be deployed to the U.S.-Mexico border to crack down on illegal immigration.

Harris also signed into law Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders' “Medicare for All” bill, which seeks to eliminate private health insurance and create a single-payer system in which the federal government is the sole provider of health insurance. Harris later proposed a “Medicare for All” bill in July 2019 that would allow Americans to keep their own private insurance companies.

Harris told CNN's Dana Bash on Thursday that she couldn't fulfill her current campaign promises because she had to work to revive the US economy, and she asserted that her values have not changed despite the change in her policy proposals.

“First of all, we needed to get our economy going, and we've done that. I'm very proud of our work to keep inflation below 3 percent, our work to cap insulin costs for seniors at $35 a month. Donald Trump said he was going to do some things, like allow Medicare to negotiate drug prices, but that didn't happen. We did that,” Harris told Bash on Thursday.

Harris' Campaign website The list of policy proposals has not yet been released, but Republican candidate Donald Trump's Website Lists 20 policy plans.
