Coach Tuberville honors his 2004 Auburn team for their recently won national title.

Auburn University made an announcement this week regarding its history in football, claiming seven additional national championships. This brings the program’s total to nine and formally acknowledges the unbeaten 2004 team.

This assertion adds up to nine titles, along with several SEC championships. However, most of these victories date back many years, so they’re more like fading memories for fans today.

What really stands out, and what fans often reflect on, was the undefeated 2004 squad. They were overlooked for the national championship game, even though they had an impressive record featuring five victories against top-15 teams.

The Tigers went on to defeat Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl, while USC triumphed over Oklahoma in the Championship Game. USC later vacated that title due to various violations. Many believe it was unjust that Auburn didn’t get their chance, and fans are enthusiastic about finally celebrating them as champions from what many consider one of the best seasons ever.

Interestingly enough, the coach during that undefeated season was Tommy Tuberville, who now serves as a U.S. Senator. He frequently expressed his views on how his team was treated unfairly.

To commemorate this recognition, Tuberville shared a video message.

“I want to congratulate the 2004 Auburn Tigers Football Team on being recognized as the true national champion of college football in 2004,” he remarked. “There’s no doubt that the Auburn team in 2004 was the best team in the country throughout the season. Congratulations to the players, coaches, parents, and our fantastic fans who made this possible. Our athletes were not just exceptional players, they were also great young men, and now they’re finally receiving the recognition they deserve.
