A Coatimundi, which belongs to the Raccoon Family, has not yet been located.
COCHISE COUNTY, Arizona — A hiker experienced a wildlife encounter in southern Arizona on Sunday, according to officials.
The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office reported that a man hiking in Ash Canyon, located south of Sierra Vista, claimed to have been attacked by an animal.
After his hike, the man returned to his vehicle and was startled to find a Coatimundi on the hood. He shouted and waved his arms in an attempt to scare it away.
According to the hiker, the animal then damaged the windshield wiper before jumping down to confront him.
Although he managed to get inside his car, he had already suffered a bite. Medical personnel indicated he was receiving a rabies vaccination at a nearby hospital.
So far, no Coatimundi has been found. Authorities mentioned that USDA wildlife specialists were unable to locate any animals in the area but would return later to continue the search.
Once discovered, any Coatimundi will be tested for rabies.
As noted by Arizona State Parks, the Coatimundi typically weighs around 18 pounds and is recognizable by its elongated snout.
Their tails often curve upwards, resembling a periscope as they navigate through their surroundings, as mentioned in an article by Arizona State Parks.
The Sheriff’s Office advises individuals who enjoy outdoor activities in rural or mountainous regions to remain vigilant and avoid engaging with wildlife.
