Flagstaff, Aliz. – The new rescue vehicle will help Coconino County first responders reach out to people in more locations than ever before.
The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office has a new truck, something you’ve probably never seen before.
It’s an amphibious vehicle on all terrains and we saw it firsthand.
It is called Shape and UTV was invented by a Ukrainian company to overcome serious terrain.
Over the summer, Coconino County search and rescue teams say the new shelps will help people thrust into the waters.
“It floats above the tires and holds 800 liters of air, so it’s absolutely huge,” Deputy Sam Lehman said.
The monsoon season and the end of winter are when this beast really comes into handy.
“You can put this into the mud six or eight times and then cra right away,” Lehman said. “If you go through the mud and hit the snow and ice, it continues.”
Part of the $525,000 state grant meant purchasing the vehicle and training to run the Shelp, a trip to Minnesota.
The vehicle itself costs $203,000.
“They gave us down and dirty driver training for it,” Lehman said. “They were driving us. We went into all sorts of swamps. We were in six or eight feet of mud. I mean everything.”

Deputy Lehman says the shape has not yet been used in many places, but he sees it as a rescue vehicle of the future.
“When you start entering a county where search and rescue falls on your shoulders, you have shoulders in the swamp, the terrible winter, I think this is going to make its own name pretty fast,” Lehman said.
Coconino County Sheriff’s Office members say the shelp will certainly save lives.
We wanted to give you a bit of perspective:
This is quite large.
