Coconino National Forest begins series of prescribed burns in northern Arizona

Lighting operations for prescribed burns are causing smoke to thicken in some areas of the Coconino National Forest as crews thin out areas of brush and dead trees.

There are 14 prescribed burns scheduled in the Coconino National Forest, starting with the Minto West burn, about 10 miles east of Mann’s Park near Mormon Lake.

The National Forest released some dramatic images of the burns.

The Minto West burn is expected to burn approximately 2,600 acres.

The Coconino National Forest has mapped out all planned burning projects. map here, The largest of these is scheduled to burn more than 16,000 acres.

The Minto West Incineration is scheduled to burn until October 7th.
