Coconino NF considering changes to fire restrictions

arizona news – The Flagstaff Ranger District (FRD) of the Coconino National Forest has a fire to limit camping, campfires, and electric use in strategic areas of the district during certain times of the year when the risk of catastrophic wildfires is high. We are considering changing the limit.

The proposed changes to the fire limit expand the boundaries of the existing year-round camping and campfire bans adjacent to the City of Flagstaff. We will also prohibit the use of motorized vehicles in the area around San Francisco Peaks, Walnut Canyon, and Pumphouse Wash during Phase 2 of our fire restrictions. These areas have rugged terrain and terrain that increases wind speed, which can limit the ability of firefighters to contain wildfires.

The proposed changes address immediate concerns about future large-scale human-induced wildfires and are part of a long-term risk reduction strategy focused on forest health and resilience.

“After taking a closer look at everything the Flagstaff Ranger District can do to reduce the risk of man-made wildfires, we know that additional measures need to be considered during the hotter, drier parts of the year. ‘ said Nick Mast, Deputy Ranger Chief. “Our top priority is community safety, and we are confident that these proposed changes strike a balance between community safety and access to public lands.”

FRD continues to enforce mechanical and regulatory fire treatments adjacent to the community, in addition to increasing restrictions to reduce man-made wildfire hazards. These treatments are intended to reduce the amount of combustible “fuel” such as pine needles, branches and trees during devastating and unplanned wildfires.

The area under consideration will remain open for use for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding during Phase 2 of the fire restrictions. Summer operations at Snowball Arizona Resort, Nordic Center and parking at popular trailheads such as Humphreys Peak and Fatman’s Loop will not be affected.

If the proposed Stage 2 fire limit changes are adopted, they will be implemented by April.

The proposed changes were developed in collaboration with key stakeholders and agencies, including the City of Flagstaff Fire Department, Coconino County, Arizona Game and Fish, and Senator Mark Kelly’s office.

Coconino NF will hold a community meeting to solicit public input prior to implementation. For future communications from Coconino NF regarding public comment options, please visit: coconinonationalforest.us Click “Get news by email” button.
