National Park Service (NPS) rangers recovered the body of a 20-year-old college student on Wednesday who died after falling hundreds of feet into the Grand Canyon.
Abel Joseph Mejia accidentally fell 400 feet about a quarter mile west of Pipe Creek Overlook, according to a press release. SaidThe National Park Service and the Coconino County Coroner's Office are currently investigating the incident, according to a press release. “This individual was hiking off-trail in this particular area, which is fairly common for a lot of people who visit here,” Grand Canyon National Park spokesman Joel Baird told CBS News. reportGrand Canyon National Park officials said all visitors should “maintain a safe distance of at least six feet (2 meters) from the rim and stay behind railings or fences at observation decks.”
Indiana Bible College in Indianapolis said in a social media post that Meijer was a student there.
“He was known for his warm smile and gentle heart, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him. Let us all say prayers for the entire Mejia family during this difficult time. May God bring comfort and peace to all who are grieving,” the university wrote on Facebook.
Turning Point Pentecostal Church said in a Facebook post that the young man had been “on a mission trip” to the Grand Canyon and asked supporters to “keep the Mejia family in prayer.”
A 55-year-old man, Ranjit Varma, died after attempting a rim-to-rim trek in the national park in September 2023. A 57-year-old female hiker died in the park in July 2023 after outdoor temperatures soared into triple digits. A 68-year-old woman, Mary Kelly, died in March 2022 after falling into rapids in the national park.
