Retirement of Colorado Buffaloes Mascot Ralphy VI
It seems many of us have a connection to Ralphy. Following four seasons of leading the Folsom Field Stamp, Ralphy VI, the live mascot for the Colorado Buffaloes, has officially retired.
The announcement occurred on Tuesday, revealing that Ember, the five-year-old bison, will no longer be leading the team onto the field before games. Interestingly enough, she prefers not to run.
The university commented, “It’s typical for mammals, both four-legged and two-legged, to show indifference to running. Given her temperament, she has chosen to simply walk through the meadows, which is what she enjoys most.”
In just 15 months, Ralphy VI, who weighs around 500 pounds, made her debut in the 2021 season and became part of the renowned Ralphy Run—an iconic tradition in college football. For those unfamiliar, this is when the bison runs onto the field accompanied by her handlers. However, Ember isn’t a fan of this high-energy role, and Colorado has recognized her feelings. She will now retire to join her predecessor, Ralphy V, known as Blackout, and enjoy her life on the ranch.
“Ember has excelled in many aspects of her role, but she finds the most comfort at the ranch. We want to honor her choices,” stated Taylor Stratton, director of Ralphy Live Mascot Programs. “She will continue to receive the same high level of care and affection that all our Ralphys do.”
Unfortunately, with this change, there won’t be a Ralphie to kick off the upcoming season. Ralphy VII has started her training to succeed Ralphy VI, but she’s not quite ready for game day yet.
