Suspicious Package at Sierra Vista VA Clinic
Sierra Vista, Ariz. – An update from the Sierra Vista Police Department revealed that a suspicious package discovered at the VA clinic was wrapped with wires and bore negative messages related to veteran issues.
The police confirmed they received a call regarding the package at around 10:15 a.m. after it was left at the front desk. In response, officials evacuated the VA Clinic and nearby businesses.
Utilizing resources from the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office and the Arizona Department of Public Safety, a robot was dispatched to evaluate the potential threat posed by the package. Ultimately, it was deemed safe, and VA personnel were allowed back into the building around 1:15 p.m., as there was no longer a concern for public safety.
The SVPD indicated that a suspect had been identified and faces charges, including threatening terrorism, disorderly conduct, and intimidation or blackmail.
“We’re thankful to the CCSO and the Arizona DPS Explosion Ordinance Disposal Unit for their assistance, as well as the community for their cooperation during this investigation,” a police spokesperson stated.
Community Update
Earlier in the day, officials announced that the packages were considered safe and posed no threat to the community.
A suspicious package had remained in the lobby of the Sierra Vista VA Clinic, leading to the evacuation of the facility. The SVPD noted on social media, “We treat packages as potential risks until they are confirmed as safe.” They are collaborating with the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office and the Arizona Public Safety Agency to further assess the situation at 101 N. Coronado Dr.
The public is advised to steer clear of the area until additional information is provided. It’s worth noting that the adjacent building was also evacuated.
This incident marks the fourth suspicious item reported in southern Arizona this month. Three similar devices have previously been discovered in Sahuarita, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Office. Updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
