Playing the ‘Maybe It’s Not Okay’ Man
MW: Could you tell us about your character? ambush and what does he stand for?
Connor Paolo: His name is Randall, but you don’t know it. was like a forward base to pick up this package on. And it is stolen and he is sent to retrieve it. To me, he was an interesting contrast to the idea of going to war. It’s destructive in nature, but you’re playing an engineer who builds things. For me, Ackermann said, “Well, I’m here to help. I’m not here to kill people. I’m here to build something. I’m here to protect other soldiers.” I’m here. It will be the people who are violent there, or at least have to do it.

And that internal contradiction, I would imagine—I have no personal experience with—but I imagine many, if not most, soldiers go through at some point. I shouldn’t have been in this situation. And more than that, he’s someone who I think took great comfort in the chain of command and said, well, “If I had to do something, at least I was told to do it.” And I think over the course of the film he realizes that they don’t know anything either. What I liked most about it is that it’s not happy at all. And there are many deaths left for him, but he cannot, and probably never will, find meaning in them. This is, at least from his point of view, kind of a story about a character broken by war and probably not okay.
MW: How was working with Aaron Eckhart and Jonathan Rhys Meyers?
Paolo: Aaron, I’m sorry I didn’t get to meet you. I was shooting in a different location. But Johnny was really nice as a person and as an actor, very generous and very kind. Personally, we worked together many years ago. alexander… so that he could be seen again as an adult and now he is a father. It was really cool for me. It’s not unusual to work with actors in the industry many times. But after all these years, it’s usually really nice to cross paths with someone again… He’s been working with me and I’m just starting out and I’m not sure who I am. As an actor, I’m not completely lost yet, but at least I have a different perspective on things. increase. So it was really nice to know that I could see him again.
Clint Eastwood and upcoming projects
MW: Co-starring mysterious riverWhat was it like working with Clint Eastwood all those years ago?
Paolo: It was a long time ago, but my memories of working with Clint Eastwood are hazy, but it’s all really positive. It was my first experience on a movie set. Eastwood works in a way that I have always really admired. The guy doesn’t just film rehearsals, he shows them on screen. He has a deep understanding of filmmaking techniques and is able to maintain this state of flow at all times because he has a great deal of trust in his actors. I heard later from others who worked with him that in my own very brief experience, I was like, “I cast you because I trust you. That’s why you’re here.” You do the character I respect him in the sense that he doesn’t have to make movies anymore he doesn’t do anything I don’t love it, but it’s really cool, yeah, I love the fact that the guy doesn’t stop.

MW: Are there any actors or filmmakers you would like to work with in the future?
Paolo: Now put Martin McDonagh on top [all else]I have been a fan of him ever since [McDonagh] I was just doing plays. His mix of morality plays out in darkness and character, and I love his writing. Inishelin’s Bansheegoing from one of his most expansive stories to Three billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri Probably his most intimate setting and story was really great. Most directors go on and on so it was great to see them go down small.I love his work with Colin Farrell I love him, so I would like to work with him.
