Controversial Little League Bat Sold for Nearly $10,000

ESPN reports that the bat involved in a legal dispute between a 12-year-old player and Little League officials fetched a price of $9,882 on Friday. This bat, signed by Marcorocco, received 68 bids in a Goldin auction, following an incident during a home run celebration in the Little League Section Tournament Final on July 16. Marcorocco flipped the bat in celebration, which led to his immediate ejection from the game and a one-game suspension. Interestingly, the funds from this auction will go to the same organization that suspended him.

In response to the suspension, Marco’s father, Joe Rocco, took legal action against Little League. He managed to secure a temporary restraining order, allowing his son to participate in a double elimination tournament despite the initial ruling.

“Marco loves Little League and is pleased to be able to give back to an organization he loves so much,” Joe Rocco said, reflecting the sentiments reported. “The Little League has been a huge part of Marco’s life for a long time.”

The incident surrounding the bat flip gained traction beyond local discussions, with several Major League players expressing support for the young player. They felt the punishment was excessive for what was essentially a harmless celebration. Interestingly, Little League later went ahead to sell commemorative pins highlighting various moments from the Little League World Series.

This incident unfolded during a pivotal game, where Marco celebrated his home run by tossing his bat. Umpires swiftly ejected him, citing Little League rules, which prompted the Rocco family’s legal action shortly thereafter.

The identity of the auction winner remains unknown, but the approximately $10,000 raised will benefit the Haddon Field Little League program.
