The sheriff’s office said the mother had run over her 13-month-old baby with a car. A police report said the car was parked on a gravel road next to the house.
Before the incident, the mother had said she thought the baby was safe in a child seat outside the car, officials said.
The child was “severely injured” when the car’s front tire got caught in the child seat canopy and the seat fell backwards, officials said.
Medical personnel tried to save the infant, but the infant was pronounced dead at a local hospital, officials said.
The case is still under investigation, according to the sheriff’s office.
