Democrat California Sen. Adam Schiff said on Sunday that former Vice President Kamala Harris lost the 2024 election to President Donald Trump because he was the “current status quo” candidate.
Despite polls showing tough competition between Harris and Trump in 2024, the president won both a popular vote for election colleges and Republicans, with Democrats questioning their mistakes. With “Meet the Press,” host Kristen Welker began by cultivating a new book by author Chris Whipple. The book insists that Biden repeatedly “struggles to concentrate” before he withdraws from the race. (Related: Biden Allies reportedly prepared for his death in 2023)
“Do you think former President Biden’s advisor misled the American people about his abilities?” Welker asked.
“You know, it’s difficult to measure what the closest advisor to the president was seeing at the time,” Schiff replied. “I can only talk about my interactions with him. It’s mainly a ritual opportunity in the months leading up to him getting out of the race. But I’ll say this: He decided to get out of the race. I think it was the right decision.”
Biden withdrew from the presidential election on July 21, 2024. This was publicly spoken from Schiff and pressured by the party, including donors, following the tragic debate over Trump. But before the former president’s call out, Biden’s White House staff and Democrats tried to downplay Republican concerns while defending Biden’s mental fitness.
Schiff then pivoted to discuss Harris’ campaign, saying that despite his “great” attempt, he was unable to “escape” the existing conditions he faced as a candidate.

“But you know, I’ll say this. He decided to get out of the race. I think that was the right decision,” Schiff continued. “I think the Vice President, as Vice President, had a great campaign, but I couldn’t escape being a representative of the current situation.”
“The fact is that people are hurting and hurting for a long time. This is frankly decades to create the issue of people working harder than ever and still not getting it,” Schiff said.
Schiff then criticized Trump’s economic decision, saying Democrats “have to tackle some of the core challenges in our economy, structural challenges.”
“I think the Democrats didn’t do that in the past have resulted in losing the White House. The devastating damage they’re doing to the economy now will be losing Congress to Trump and Republicans.
When Harris got his job with the president, he was repeatedly criticized for clearly avoiding detailed interviews, particularly for flip-flops on some left-leaning policies he supported before 2020.
Harris couldn’t answer basic questions about how to address the concerns of the biggest US voters, including the economy, inflation and immigration, but fellow lawmakers like Schiff defended her. Before Harris’ debate over Trump, Schiff told MSNBC’s Jen Psaki that the biggest challenge for the former vice president is “knowing the facts” and limiting his ability to use a “wideer vision” for Trump.
