FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Wyoming Cowgirls tennis team started the weekend in great fashion, defeating UTEP 4-0 on Saturday.
Saturday's game was played on Northern Arizona's campus.
The Cowgirls (4-4) worked quickly to win the match and easily earned doubles points. Wyoming won first and second place in convincing fashion on Saturday.
Violetta Borodina and Sophie Zehender's team improved to 6-0 in two games this spring, winning 6-1 and taking first place. In second place, Noeska Brink and Nicole Dobrilova won 6-2. Jessel Ante and Lucia Marinac took third and led 5-2, giving the Cowgirls the points.
In singles, the Cowgirls won first, fifth and sixth against the Miners. Zehendar played in first place and won 6-3, 6-4. In fifth place, Ante won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Despite being in 6th place, Marinac easily won 6-2, 6-0.
“I thought we played solid doubles overall today,” head coach Dean Clower said after the game.
“We felt like we were playing our style of tennis on every line in doubles. In singles, we jumped out early on many lines and the energy continued throughout. NAU is a very well-coached team. So we need to prepare for the next fight tomorrow (Sunday).”
UC will wrap up this weekend's swing on the road against host Northern Arizona at 10 a.m. Sunday.
