Crash closes section of freeway from Arizona to New Mexico

WILLCOX, Ariz. (AP) — A semi-tractor trailer blaze early Wednesday damaged a pillar on an overpass in southeastern Arizona, driving Interstate 10 from Wilcox to the New Mexico state line. section has been closed, officials said.

An official with the Arizona Department of Transportation said the crash killed the driver of the large rig.

They said the semi-truck veered off the right side of the roadway, hit a guardrail, and then struck a pole on a Highway 191 overpass west of Wilcox. One column buckled and the truck caught fire.

The westbound lane of I-10 was closed on the New Mexico side of the state line about 60 miles (96.56 km) from the crash site.

ADOT officials said temporary bridge repairs could take up to two days before lanes can reopen, and crews will work around the clock.

The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office and ADOT advised commuters to avoid the crash site and take an alternate route from New Mexico, traveling southwest toward the border and returning to Benson via Bisbee and Tombstone. I was advising you.
