Former Marine Daniel Penny said Tuesday he stands by his actions on the New York City subway despite years of harsh criticism.
Monaka interview Mr. Penny speaks with Judge Jeanine Pirro on “The Five” and reveals his motives, stating that he is putting the safety of others ahead of his own comfort in the spotlight of the public and media, thereby preventing potential harm. He said he had intervened to protect the country. He added that he would endure “millions of court appearances and the hate and slander that comes with them” to prevent even one person from being harmed.
“This type of thing is very unpleasant. Being in this kind of attention and limelight is very unpleasant. I think I’m better off without it. I don’t want any attention or praise. I did…and I still don’t want to if he threatens me. “If I did something that hurt someone, I would feel guilty and I would never be able to live with myself,” Penny said. Pirro told me when I asked him if he had chosen .
Penny also cited the broader implications of his experience and criticized the policies of liberal city leaders that he believes contributed to the subway incident.
“These public officials are going to do very selfish things…These political interests, these are their policies, and I’m not going to get political and make enemies. I think so,” Penny said.
A Manhattan court acquitted Penny on Monday after a jury last week dismissed charges of second-degree manslaughter after failing to reach a unanimous verdict. In May 2023, Penny subdued 30-year-old Jordan Neely by choking him on a New York City subway train after he began exhibiting erratic behavior.
Law enforcement officials and witnesses on the F train said Neely was screaming and acting unpredictable, making passengers feel threatened. Prosecutors say Penny continued to strangle Neely for about six minutes. (Related article: Daniel Penny pleads not guilty)
Penny’s attorney, Thomas Kenniff, previously said he was confident the Manhattan jury would focus solely on the facts, not racial issues, despite his recent refusal to dismiss the case.
