With the results of yesterday's primary election known, Shomali Figures is seeking to become the first representative of the newly redistricted 2nd Congressional District against House Minority Leader Rep. Anthony Daniels (D). Huntsville) will face a runoff election.
The runoff will be held on April 16, and the winner will have to face the winner of the Republican runoff between Caroleen Dobson and Dick Brewbaker.
This race in particular received a lot of attention because of the intrigue and uncertainty surrounding the Democratic primary. A consistent question voters were asked in the lead-up to the primary was, “Do you care if the candidate lives in your district?” Given that Mr. Figures lives in the district and Mr. Daniels does not, the key results may indicate that factor is at play.
According to the Secretary of State's results: Website This figure leads the pack, receiving 24,825 votes or 43.45 percent of the vote. Mr. Daniels came in second place, receiving 22.36 percent of the vote or a total of 12,774 votes. Figure also received more votes in Montgomery County, even though Daniels serves as a lawmaker in the area.
Although Mr. Figures lives in the district, he also touts his resume to work at the federal level. He worked on former President Barack Obama's campaign and most recently served as deputy chief of staff to Attorney General Merrick Garland.
Mr. Figures is also the son of Sen. Vivian Davis Figures, D-Mobile, and former state Sen. Michael Figures. Michael passed away in 1996.
Daniels also served as a member of Congress from 2014 before becoming House Minority Leader in 2017.
According to the Alabama Reflector, Daniels and Figures released a statement regarding the primary findings.
“As this district is drawn, we see an opportunity to bring experienced leadership to Washington to ensure that the voices of the people from Mobile to Montgomery and every county in between are finally heard in Congress. “I was aware of that,” Figures said. “Tonight, voters in the 2nd District seized that opportunity, and it’s thanks to each and every one of you who voted, volunteered, and supported our campaign.”
“Tonight's results demonstrate that the people of the 2nd Congressional District want a representative who understands their community and has a proven track record of getting results,” Daniels said in a statement. Stated.
The winner of the runoff between Mr. Daniels and Mr. Figures will have an advantage in winning the general election in November, as districts will be redrawn in October to preserve the voting power of Black voters.
