“Dawson’s Creek” star James Van Der Beek has revealed that he has been diagnosed with colorectal cancer and is battling it.

“I have personally dealt with this diagnosis and, with the support of my wonderful family, have taken steps toward resolution,” he told the publication.

“About 2 billion people worldwide receive this diagnosis each year, and I’m one of them,” he wrote on his social media page.

“I don’t have a strategy for how I’m going to publish these things, but I was going to talk about this at length in People magazine in the near future…to raise awareness and tell my story in my own words.” he said.

The famous actor explained that he felt the need to make his statement after learning that the media could break the story.

“However, we had to change our plans early this morning when we were informed that the tabloid was planning to publish this story,” he said.

“I have personally dealt with this issue and have worked harder than ever to seek treatment and improve my overall health. I am in a good place and feeling strong. It’s been quite an introductory period, so I’ll tell you more when I’m ready,” he told fans.

It was clear that this was not the way he was going to discuss his plans, nor was it the pace he wanted.
